Masters champion Scottie Scheffler claims first PGA Tour win since Augusta

Scheffler one stroke ahead of Xander Schauffele

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler claimed his first PGA Tour win since Augusta as he held off Xander Schauffele to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational by one stroke.

The American carded a closing 72 at Bay Hill to finish on 15 under par, with Schauffele second after a 68.

Scheffler had missed the cut in his previous two tournaments

Scheffler had missed the cut in his previous two tournaments but rediscovered his best form in Orlando.

He began the final round with a one-shot lead over Tyrrell Hatton and increased his advantage to three with a birdie on the second hole.

Schauffele reduced the deficit after the turn and briefly drew level with a birdie on the 13th, but Scheffler responded with a birdie of his own on the next.

Schauffele had a chance to force a play-off on the 18th but missed from 12 feet for birdie.

Scheffler praised Palmer's legacy

Scheffler said: "Winning this tournament means a lot. Mr Palmer was one of the first guys that got me into golf when I was a kid.

"I was able to watch him play at Augusta when I was pretty young. It was special to be able to come out on top this week."
