Miami Dolphins quarterback Josh Allen to miss start of 2023 season after suffering hand injury

Third-year quarterback expected to be out for 2-4 weeks

Allen suffered a hairline fracture in his throwing hand during a team practice session

Miami Dolphins quarterback Josh Allen is expected to miss the start of the 2023 NFL season after suffering a hairline fracture in his throwing hand, the team announced on Wednesday.

The third-year quarterback is expected to be out for 2-4 weeks, a significant blow to the Dolphins' hopes of making a playoff push in 2023.

Allen, who took over as the Dolphins' starting quarterback in 2021, has been one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the NFL. In 2022, he threw for 4,462 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, leading the Dolphins to a 9-8 record.

With Allen out, the Dolphins are expected to turn to veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to start the season. Bridgewater, who has started 74 games in his career, joined the Dolphins in the offseason after spending the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos.

The Dolphins open the 2023 season on Sept. 11 at home against the New England Patriots.

The loss of Allen is a major setback for the Dolphins, who were hoping to make a playoff run in 2023. The Dolphins have not made the playoffs since 2016, and they have not won a playoff game since 2000.
