Monday's Quake Startles Residents, No Major Damage Reported

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Monday, with its epicenter located near Highland Park in Los Angeles County. The quake occurred at 12:20 p.m. PT and was felt throughout the region, shaking buildings and startling residents.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a depth of 5.4 miles and was followed by several smaller aftershocks. There have been no reports of major damage or injuries as a result of the quake.

The earthquake was the strongest in the region since a 4.6 magnitude quake that hit in July 2022. However, it is significantly weaker than the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Ridgecrest in 2019, causing significant damage and injuries.

Scientists are still investigating the cause of the earthquake, but it is likely related to the San Andreas Fault, which runs through Southern California. The fault is known for producing large earthquakes, including the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Residents are advised to be prepared for future earthquakes and to follow safety precautions, such as having an emergency kit and knowing what to do during an earthquake. The California Earthquake Clearinghouse website (https://www.eqclearinghouse.org/) provides valuable information and resources for earthquake preparedness.
